Wharton Research Data Service - WRDS

WRDS is a service which provides web based access to the following data sources
                     CRSP - Monthly Stock Prices (We do not subscribe to Daily Price data)
                     Computstat
                     Dow Jones Averages
                     FDIC
                     Foreign Exchange Rates
                     PHLX

WRDS accounts have access  the data and WRDS professional support. The WRDS support personnel are well versed in research needs and can help you with your data access requests.

Note: We no longer license Research Insight which had been used to access Compustat data. This product has been superceded by WRDS

WRDS Licensing and account creation

Individual WRDS accounts are available to all SBA Faculty, Staff and PHD students. To apply for an account got to https://wrds.wharton.upenn.edu  Fill out the appropriate form and the request will be emailed to Roger Clauer, the site administrator for approval. Once the account is approved you will be emailed your id and password and you may begin using WRDS. For faculty and staff the approval is automatic and usually is turned around in less than 24 hours. For PHD students, we do required authorization from a SBA professor simply verifying that the PHD student is in fact an SBA student.

Use of WRDS in the Classroom

WRDS is available for use by instructors in large classroom settings. In this scenario, the entire class is assigned a common ID and password. The ID would not have access to the WRDS support personnel and would not have disk storage space at WRDS. The ID would be able to access and retrieve all data to which we subscribe. Thomson Financial

The Thomson Financial contract has been renegotiated and the service is available for use.

The following link will allow you to access the Thomson Financial Global Access  through any computer connected to the SBA network without a userid or password.

Note: If you are in Global Access and you click on the tab for Thomson Analytics, it will ask you for a password. To avoid this, use the above link.

If you need to access either Thomson Financial products from offsite (home),  you will need a Userid and password. Userids and passwords will be made available to Faculty and PHD students (with faculty approval). The guidelines for Userid assignment will be the same as WRDS except that there is no automated request procedure. To request and ID, simply send an email request to epd@uwm.edu and an id will be assigned to you. Assigning unique ids to individuals will eliminate some of the coordination problems such as multiple people trying to use the same id at the same time (which is not allowed).

CCH

The FARS, GARS & AICPA databases have been replaced by the CCH Accounting Research Manager.  Access to the database is limited to two (2) concurrent users for FARS and one (1) concurrent user for GARS.  AICPA is unlimited.  The database also includes a 10K lookup.  For more information, contact Paul Fischer.
