Services Provided by SBA Technology Staff

The SBA Technology staff provides basic desktop and server support for the faculty, staff and students. In addition,  there are a number of other services which may be of interest as they might be useful for your classroom or research needs. All of the services can be tailored to your specific requirements and the the list below is intended to provide examples of the types of services which are available.

  1. Class Web sites - We have the ability to set up a custom website for your class where each student can have their own "sub web". You might use this to assign a web site creation project to your class. Alternatively, we can set this up by team, if you would rather make this a group project. All of our web sites run on the SBA servers and support FrontPage.  Class Web sites have been widely used in the MIS area but we have also seen use by other areas such as Marketing.

  2. H/J Drive folders - The H/J Drive is simply a network location which has been set up for students to store their homework assignments. Originally developed for MIS students to hold their programs when floppy disks became too small, the concept can be used in any class where an instructor wants students to turn in large homework assignments. This class oriented storage makes it easy for instructors to see the work of only the students in their class. Like the Class Web sites, H/J Drive locations can also be set up for teams.  Because the H/J drive is directly accessible through the network, instructors can directly access the data without downloading files as they might have to do with web based products such as D2L. Finally, the H/J Drive space is on a server that is protected by McAfee Virus protection.  This means that when you access a student's assignment, you have a reasonable assurance that it is virus free.

  3. Research Projects - We have the ability to provide special setups for unique research projects. In the past we have installed unique software in N216 to allow a professor to run an experiment with his students. We have worked with another professor to setup N219 to use the idle computer time of all the machines in parallel to solve a complex computational problem. These setups do require some lead time but we will do everything possible to accommodate you.

The above are just examples of the types of services and solutions that we can provide. If you have a special request or requirement, please contact Eric Dietenberger (epd@uwm.edu

Scheduling procedures:

Scheduling for all the above SBA facilities is done through the Dean's Office and Kathy Dorfner (x4238). Faculty may schedule rooms for demonstrations or specific software instruction. The total hours of reserved time should not exceed 2 times the credit hours of the class. For example, a three credit course could reserve a maximum of 6 hours of lab time per semester. The hours can be allocated in whatever manner fits the instructor's requirements and the lab schedule.

Alternative Facilities:

N234C is a 56 seat General Access Campus Computer Lab (CCL) which is controlled by I&MT. This lab does have all of the standard SBA applications on a second disk drive which can be accessed by flipping a toggle switch and  rebooting the computer. This room may also be available for instructional purposes but the rules for use and the  schedule is controlled by I&MT. This room does not have a permanent projector but it may be possible to have one brought in. Anyone interested in reserving this room should contact Erica Mendez (x3782)

Classroom Training:

In order to teach in any of the SBA's classrooms, you will need a key to the console as well as the access code.  Both are provided as a part of the training given by the campus classroom team.  The current schedule for training can be found at: https://www3.uwm.edu/IMT/services/instruct/multimedia/media_training.cfm

Classroom Support:

Support for the classrooms in the SBA is provided by SBA's technical staff from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm M-F.  Please call Eric Dietenberger at 22-6707 of Keith Kunkel at 229-3893 during these times.  Otherwise, call 229-2382 if you run into problems.
